Nanometer samarium oxide is a pale yellow or white powder. It melts at approximately 2335°C and has a density of about 5.6 g/cm³. It is paramagnetic at room temperature, insoluble in water, but soluble in acids, with a primarily cubic crystal structure. The Sm³⁺ ion has characteristic emission peaks in the visible region. Certain isotopes, like Sm-149, have a very high thermal neutron absorption cross-section. Storage sealed in a dry environment is recommended to prevent reaction with atmospheric moisture and CO₂.
Applications:
1. Nuclear Industry: A key component in control rods, neutron absorbers, and shielding materials in nuclear reactors due to the high neutron capture cross-section of Sm-149.
2. Catalysis: Used as a catalyst in petroleum chemistry (e.g., ethanol dehydration to ethylene, methane reforming) and in automotive exhaust catalysts.
3. Permanent Magnets: A crucial raw material for Samarium-Cobalt (SmCo) magnets, known for high magnetic performance, superior temperature stability, and corrosion resistance, used in aerospace, defense, and high-performance motors.
4. Phosphors: Used as an activator ion in phosphors emitting orange-red light, applied in X-ray intensifying screens and certain displays.
5. Electronic Ceramics: An additive in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) and piezoelectric ceramics, improving dielectric properties and sintering density.
