Holmium oxide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ho2O3. It is a compound composed of the rare earth element holmium and oxygen. Together with dysprosium oxide, it is one of the substances with the strongest paramagnetism known. Holmium oxide is one of the components of the erbium oxide mineral. In its natural state, holmium oxide often coexists with trivalent oxides of lanthanide elements and requires specialized methods to separate them. Holmium oxide can be used to prepare glass of special colors. The visible absorption spectra of glass and solutions containing holmium oxide have a series of sharp peaks, and thus have traditionally been used as standards for calibrating spectrophotometers.
Applications:
1.It is used for manufacturing a new type of light source, dysprosium-holmium lamps.
2. It is used as a special scintillation crystal growth additive, etc.
3. It can be used as a standard for calibrating spectrometers.
4. It is used for the production of metallic holmium or holmium iron and can be added to neodymium iron boron magnetic materials.

Holmium oxide is a yellow powder, molecular formula Ho2O3, insoluble in water and soluble in acid. The color change of holmium oxide was significant under light conditions. Light yellow in sunlight, strong orange-red in trichromatic light source, almost indistinguishable from erbium oxide in the same light, which is related to its sharp phosphorescent emission band. Holmium oxide has a band gap up to 5.3 eV wide and, therefore, should be colourless. The yellow of holmium oxide is the result of numerous lattice defects such as oxygen vacancy and internal conversion of Ho3+. |
