Germanium dioxide has two variants: insoluble and soluble. The former is a colorless tetragonal prismatic with a melting point of 1115±4℃, a relative density of 6.23925, and a refractive index of 1.99. It is insoluble in water and acid or alkali solutions, and only melts with ten times the amount of NaOH at 550℃. The latter is a colorless rhombic crystal of the hexagonal crystal system, with a melting point of 1115±4℃, a relative density of 4.22825, and a refractive index of 1.695. It is readily soluble in water and soluble in acids and alkalis. The transformation temperatures of the two variants are 1033℃. The transformation between dicrystal forms is very slow. There is also a colorless and transparent glassy substance, which is obtained by rapidly cooling molten germanium dioxide. Hexagonal crystals and glassy substances can dissolve in hydrochloric acid to form germanium tetrachloride and in hydrofluoric acid to form germanium hexafluoride. The tetragonal crystal has inert chemical properties and is only soluble in excess molten alkali and molten sodium carbonate. The hydrolysis method of germanium tetrachloride involves adding 6.5 times the volume of distilled water to germanium tetrachloride, stirring and leaving it for one day and one night to form germanium dioxide precipitate. Then, wash it with cold water until the wash solution contains no Cl-. Germanium dioxide products are obtained by drying at 200℃. Its GeCl4+2H2O→GeO2+4HCl |
